Past Research Experience

  • Physics Department at University of Nevada-Las Vegas . Studying the thermodynamic properties of various systems with an emphasis on correlated-electron materials in applied magnetic fields. Developing capability of measuring magnetization and electrical resistivity in a diamond-anvil cell in high magnetic fields. Continuing de Haas-van Alphen measurements as a visitor to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
  • Material Science Division at LANL . Determined the Fermi surface of highly correlated electron systems by measuring de Haas-van Alphen effect in pulsed fields to 60 T at NHMFL-LA . Developed rotating probe to do angle-resolved de Haas-van Alphen measurements. Constructed a complete low temperature setup for performing de Haas-van Alphen measurements on transuranic systems.
  • Dr. Jon Lawrence in the Physics and Astronomy Department at University of California-Irvine . Studied the thermodynamic, with the primary focus on thermal expansion, hall effect and specific heat, properties of YbInCu 4 and related compounds and CMR materials. Showed that the critical point in the YbIn 1-x Ag x Cu 4 series was due to a sudden change in the carrier density.
  • Professor James S. Schilling in the Physics Department at Washington University, St. Louis . Measured in a diamond-anvil cell the dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature of rare earth and actinide based ferromagnets on very high hydrostatic pressure. Wound and miniaturized small coil systems to measure the a.c. susceptibility. Increased the pressure that can be routinely reached. Developed model to estimate the anisotropic compressibility of copper-oxide based superconductors.
  • 3M in Minneapolis . Mechanical properties of laminated tapes and adhesives were investigated to improve performance and expand possible uses. Results published in internal research report.
  • Dr. Donglu Shi at Argonne National Laboratory . Synthesized numerous samples of copper-oxide superconductors. Fabricated samples included bulk, sintered and thick films prepared by a melt anneal technique.
  • Dr. L. Scott Chumbley at Ames National Laboratory . Investigated properties of copper-oxide superconductors using electron and optical microscopy. Deduced the quality of samples fabricated by various techniques using a scanning electron microscope. Studied twinning using optical techniques.
